The crazy wonderland of Seoul's party motels

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 08:39 PM PST

They used to be called "love motels," for obvious (and optimistic) reasons.

Heavily stigmatized, Seoul's love motels were long regarded as nothing more than glorified DVD rooms, with decor straight out of adult movies. Horrified parents would hold public protests if any were built in their neighborhood.

In recent years, however, a new generation of Seoul's boutique motels have started styling themselves as "theme motels" and "party motels," and have made much headway in making motels become socially acceptable, and even sought after -- day or night.

Tiger safari

Who comes first -- tigers or tourists?

India's Supreme Court is to decide, based on a recent petition, whether to accept proposals to shift tourists to "fringe" or "buffer zones" outside of core tiger habitats in order to protect the endangered species.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), which has filed the petition, puts the number of remaining tigers in India at 1,706, spread among 40 wildlife reserves.

Posted: 14 Nov 2011 02:00 PM PST

West Lake may be the pinnacle Hangzhou experience, but just outside the city are an assortment of camera- and hike-worthy views.

These local favorites are listed in order of nearest to furthest from the city center.

Tianmu Mountain Scenic Area

The closest thing in China to California's Sequoia National Forest, Tianmu Mountain (or Tianmushan) is stacked with Japanese cedar trees that tower to dizzying heights.

Hikers here are consistently awed by this mystical, UNESCO-listed biosphere.

Amid Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian temples and graveyards hidden in the woods live hundreds of rare animal species, 39 of them endangered, such as the bizarre hairy-footed muntjac (黑鹿) and clouded leopard (云豹).

There is an addiction that has passed unnoticed into the very heart of modern society, threatening to ensnare the minds of everyone reading this article, and more.

It is insidiously creeping up on hitherto reasonable members of the civilized world, turning us all into beaming, giggling fools, our faces locked into clownish grins and our brains distracted at the slightest click.

The bane of 21st-century life is the phone camera, a product of such technological prowess and immediate convenience that no one would blame you for "just trying it."

But one click leads to another; if you don't like the first hit you delete and try again.
