Tokyo dental fad? Make your teeth look worse

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Japanese yaeba teeth

Tourists come to Asia from all over the world to take advantage of affordable and top-quality cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures.

But in what could be a new fad in Japan has us wondering how many people will be flying in for supplemental dental work that promises to make teeth appear crooked.

Perhaps your folks spent thousands on fixing your wonky teeth all those years ago.

But chances are, if you were born in Japan, it was more like zero -- the lack of orthodontists is one reason why having a mouth full of straight teeth isn't such a big deal here.

Early Hong Kong travel in pictures, guide books and Louis Vuitton trunks

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 09:59 PM PDT

Early Hong Kong Travel

What did tourists do in Hong Kong 100 years ago? The Avenue of Stars certainly didn't exist then.

This is the subject of the current exhibition "Early Hong Kong Travel (1880-1939)" which showcases more than 100 exhibits at the University of Hong Kong Museum and Art Gallery.

Louis Vuitton and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Limited have contributed to the exhibition and LV's vintage monogrammed trunks are a big draw.

But the museum's honorary advisor Benjamin W. Yim, who has loaned much of his own collection of Hong Kong tourism historical artifacts to the exhibit, hopes that visitors will enjoy the show in its entirety.

"This exhibition can give everyone a perspective of Hong Kong history," says Yim.

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 05:00 PM PDT

Where to watch the Rugby World Cup in Singapore

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 03:00 PM PDT

Rugby and Singapore go a long way back.

The "hooligans' game played by gentlemen" was brought over by the British in the 19th century, with Singapore competing in the Malay Cup, one of the oldest rugby competitions in the world.

Come 2019, with the Rugby World Cup being hosted in Japan, Singapore will co-host five  matches; but until the rugby ball lands on our shores, we have only satellite feeds for our rugby fix.

But no one said that we should stay at home for it …

Spotting Shanghai as a prime city to regain its footing in Asia, the Johnnie Walker House in Sinan Mansions serves as the brand's first -- and only -- location outside Scotland.

In addition to hosting private events, the institution runs private jaunts through its residence in the leafy former French Concession -- if only you can keep up.

"Keep Walking" are onerous words on a normal tour, but they reappear throughout the three-level liquor lodgings.

The new Bibimbap: A modern take on a Korean food favorite

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 02:55 PM PDT

For Seoulites craving some variation on their traditional bowl of bibimbap, these three creative innovations new to the scene serve up a culinary adventure.

1. The Lounge: the artistic touch

For a more artistic experience of this beloved dish, visit The Lounge on the 24th floor of the Park Hyatt hotel in Samseong-dong.

Instead of the standard rice in a bowl with various vegetables and other ingredients laid on top, the Park Hyatt lays the bibimbap ingredients out separately on a large, rectangular plate, like a palette.
