| Top Seoul streets to view scenic fall foliage Posted: 26 Oct 2011 01:16 AM PDT  Yep, it's that time of year again -- leaves are dying all over the place and everyone can't wait to go see those last glorious bursts of color. For all the amateur photographers and romance-hunting couples out there, Seoul's parks and landscapes department released an official list of the top 80 "most beautiful streets for fall foliage" today. That makes for 137.69 kilometers of hand-holding while your feet crunch along on a colorful leafy carpet.      |
| Posted: 25 Oct 2011 09:12 PM PDT  A bunch of media people, Boeing and ANA executives and one hardcore fan who paid US$33,000 for a seat are to be the first passengers on the much-anticipated Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The maiden commercial flight took off from Narita, near Tokyo, on October 26, landing in Hong Kong at 4.pm. local time. But, we have to ask, why so much fuss? Clearly the airlines see something they like. Japanese airline ANA, the inaugural customer for the three-years-delayed high-tech jetliner, has put in an order for 55 of the aircraft. And despite China Eastern canceling its order of 24 aircraft, there is still a total order list of 797 aircraft.    |
| Travel makes us happy: Here's why Posted: 25 Oct 2011 03:00 PM PDT  At the conclusion of a recent Intelligence Squared Asia debate on whether "Money Can't Buy Happiness," the audience was split -- 49 percent agreed and 49 percent disagreed, with 2 percent undecided. But when it came to travel, there was one very obvious winning premise -- travel makes us all happy. As a luxury travel planner, I thought it was pretty obvious: travel makes us happy, but one needs money to buy wondrous, inspiring travel experiences. Ergo, money can buy happiness.    |

There's just something about this southern Chinese territory that makes its citizens love wearing outlandish attire and behaving inappropriately for their age. Also on CNNGo: Spot yourself at the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens Bars and clubs in Hong Kong have adopted Saturday, October 29, as the official night for frightful fun. The streets of Lan Kwai Fong will be packed on that night and heavily policed for crowd control. Outside of LKF though, we like these parties for getting our ghost on -- plus our picks of the best family-friendly Halloween parties.    |
| Shibamata: Where history and movies collide in suburban Tokyo Posted: 25 Oct 2011 02:55 PM PDT  Take it from the expert -- Kit Nagamura, author and "The Backstreet Stories" columnist for the "Japan Times", has a few words of advice for the urban adventurer in Tokyo. "All you need for a successful exploit are sunglasses, Band-Aids, sunscreen, a camera, a travel card, a phrasebook and ¥3,000," she says. "The fear factor of going off the grid and wandering into the wrong neighborhood is zero and no matter where you are in Tokyo you can usually get home in a cab on that ¥3,000." Of the myriad places she's explored, one of Nagamura's favorite spots in Tokyo is Shibamata -- a curio of a town that mixes history and fiction into one heady brew.    |
| Posted: 25 Oct 2011 02:00 PM PDT  忍者の生き残りを探すのはあまり難しくない。 彼は東京郊外のうらぶれた街、野田市に住み、そこで活動している。線路下の狭い稽古場で教えを授けているのだ。 稽古場の中は涼しくて暗い。肖像画、ろうそく、壁に掛けられた神秘的な武器、そして神棚が並んでいる。日曜日の午後、この道場の真ん中で、師範初見良昭が教えを請うすべての者に稽古をつけるのだ。 忍術は秘伝であるとは限らない。だがその稽古は痛みを伴うことが多い。 今日は私にとって初めての体験であった。 「正しく行えば、頬骨を割ることになります」。通訳を通してそう説明した初見は、不意打ちとも言えるチョップを、彼のおよそ4分の1程の年齢の筋肉隆々たるオーストラリア留学生に撃った。 死ぬまで修行次の誕生日には80歳になるという初見だが、半世紀以上も訓練を積んだ今でもまだ修行中だという。 彼は 10万人余の門下生のいる武神館武道体術の師範であり、精神的なリーダーでもある。 門下生のほとんどが外国人であり、その多くは野田市で初見の稽古を受けるために来日している。
今日の私の稽古相手はドイツ人の警察官でベテランの武道家でもあるDirk Rummelだった。彼は本部道場へ「武者修行」のために来たという。    |
| Are Kangaroo Island's koalas under threat? Posted: 25 Oct 2011 12:58 PM PDT  South Australia's Kangaroo Island takes its name from the mobs of kangaroos that graze its dense bush. Koalas were introduced in the 1920s, and flourished so spectacularly that at one point it looked like they might overrun the 4,405-square-kilometer island. But now the koala colony could be under threat. An AIDS-like retrovirus has made its way from the mainland and been detected on the island. Some expert warnings are dire: it could eventually wipe out the population. The Koala Research Network told a recent Senate inquiry the disease is spreading through the island like wildfire.    |
