Shanghai Tang moves into Mongolian yurts in Hong Kong

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 02:56 AM PDT

Shanghai Tang will be moving into yurts -- the tents favored by Mongolian nomads -- by November.

After 17 years at the Pedder Building in Central, Shanghai Tang lost the bid for the space to Abercrombie & Fitch, which agreed to pay two and half times the previous rent.

Rent more than doubled to HK$7 million for the original flagship store space in the Pedder Building.

Travel website Tripadvisor.com has announced the winners of its "2011 Traveler's Choice Food and Wine Destinations" awards, with Bangkok beating out Hong Kong to claim top prize in the Asia category.

But though Bangkok might be making great strides where wine appreciation is concerned, it's definitely the food and not the drink that earned this street food mega-city the top spot on the list.

Here are the full lists of Asia, United States and European winners.

Phillippa Stewart:

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 03:00 PM PDT

10 mountains for every kind of climber

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 03:00 PM PDT

Climbing pioneer George Mallory scaled some of the world's biggest peaks "because they're there." But with so many mountains and so little time, how does a climber know where to start?

We've taken some of the guesswork out of picking the perfect peak, so whether you're the next Sir Edmund Hillary or more of a mountain man wannabe, you can focus on reaching the summit.

1. Hardcore junkies: K2, Pakistan/China

Everest may be taller, but real mountaineers know no peak on the planet beats K2 for sheer intensity. If you need an introduction, odds are you should stick to admiring it from afar.

Gallery: How to take stunning city photographs

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 02:55 PM PDT

Photographing a city is no easy task.

As a landscape photographer who has lately grown accustomed to photographing the iconic national parks of America and the feeling of humble self-realization that comes from such vast natural landscapes, my assignment of photographing the landscape of Seoul -- even though it was a city that I lived in for 25 years –- came as a challenge.

If gray concrete buildings all start blurring together though the viewfinder, and there seem to be more cars and pedestrians around you than the nerve cells in your brain, it's time to put down your camera and think about a few things.

Thailand's 18 Oscar picks: It's all about culture

Kon Khon

The recent selection of the Thai traditional-dance melodrama "Kon Khon" (คนโขน) as Thailand's submission to next year's Academy Awards, while controversial because of lack of critical acclaim and box-office success, is hardly surprising.

The Oscar committee of the Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand (FNFAT), with endorsement by the Culture Ministry, has traditionally favored movies that highlight Thai culture and historical events.

But while critics noted the high-minded cultural-preservation ideals of director Sarunyu Wongkrachang, they lambasted "Kon Khon" -- a drama about rival masked-dance troupes -- for its one-dimensional characters, heavy-handed melodrama and an unfocused plot.

Retromania: Delving into Singapore’s endless love for the 1980s

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 02:55 PM PDT

It's a Wednesday night. Outside Zouk, one of Singapore's biggest homegrown clubs, and a burgeoning queue snakes from the entrance as far as the adjacent hotel.

The crowd, a mixture of under-20s hipsters and office-outfitted yuppies, waits impatiently to get past the velvet rope.

Inside is a much more unique sight to behold: Zouk's weekly Mambo Jumbo night.

Picture a dance floor brimming with 30- and 40-somethings and a cluster of incongruous youngsters dancing in synchrony.
