'Dr. Sun Yat Sen' -- a revolution in modern Chinese opera

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 09:59 PM PDT

Perhaps China's most innovative and contemporary opera to date, "Dr. Sun Yat Sen" is what composer Huang Ruo calls "a Western-style opera with Chinese characteristics."

Apt, for its eponymous subject matter is Sun Yat Sen, considered the father of modern China -- an iconic revolutionary for the Chinese-speaking world who himself embodied the merging of East and West. A Christian fluent in English but always viewed as an authentic native son by the Chinese, Sun integrated Western political theory into his blueprints for a Chinese republican government.

Top 10 bike routes, deadly Thai village, most expensive drinks

Gallery: Inside Thailand’s cobra village

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 07:58 PM PDT

It's difficult to feel at ease when walking around Ban Kok Sa-Nga, in Thailand's northeast province of Khon Kaen. Despite appearances, this quiet little village is the stuff of nightmares and bad Samuel L. Jackson movie plots.

Better known among tourists as simply "The Cobra Village," almost all of Ban Kok Sa-Nga's 140 or so homes have at least one pet snake living in a wooden box outside, from massive king cobras and deadly monocled cobras to less dangerous species like pythons and copperheaded racers.

It all started about 60 years ago, when a local doctor decided it was time to reinvent the village and convinced his fellow villagers to start acquiring snakes for their homes and put them in shows to attract tourists.

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 05:00 PM PDT

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 05:00 PM PDT

1. Roti Roppongi

The cyclewallahs of Mumbai

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 02:58 PM PDT

The Barclays Cycle Hire scheme in London is more popularly referred to as Boris' Bikes, after Mayor Boris Johnson who promoted the idea.

As an attempt to reduce central traffic congestion, Barclays Cycle Hire has been a user success, as the Paris Velib program proved earlier.

Both worked because of sensible charges, ease of use, readily available docking stations and cycle lanes to boot.

None of this exists in Mumbai.

Nor do we have an inspired mayor.

Frankly, Mumbai citizens in their daily grind on tough terrain, have very little bandwidth for stopping to think of a more eco-friendly way to live.

Architect Alastair Townsend runs the Tokyo-based practice BAKOKO. Over the coming months his company will be building a modern beach house in Chiba. Here he reveals more about the process -- and future articles will provide updates on just how a designer beach home comes to life:

Last September we were approached by a couple wanting to build a small beach house in the seaside town of Onjuku on Chiba's Pacific coast. The Australian husband -- a keen surfer with sea salt in his blood -- and his Japanese wife wanted a weekend escape from their daily grind in Tokyo.
