Jisan festival ready to rock

Jisan Valley Rock Festival

Japan has Fuji, Britain's got Glastonbury, and Korea has Jisan -- at least, that's according to the organizers of this local three-day rock extravaganza.

By mentioning the Jisan Valley Rock Festival in the same breath as other global greats, concert planners CJ E&M and Stagefactory are drawing attention away from the fierce, lengthy duel they've staged against Incheon's Pentaport Rock Festival.

In a departure from the past, the most exciting names on the 74-artist roster are local, from the folksy Jang Ki-ha and The Faces to experimental rockers Apollo 18, who made quite the landing at SXSW this year.

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 07:52 PM PDT

Life as an expat in Japan can be one long chain of ritual humblings, none more so than when you discover that any kid there aged five and above can thrash your imported hide at the great Japanese game of rock, paper scissors. No more, we say -- the beatings end today.

For that release, we owe our thanks to one Richard Cook of University College London.

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 05:08 PM PDT

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 05:02 PM PDT
