If one were to ask a Norwegian to list his/her nation's top three most famous exports, chances are they'll toss out at least one of these greats: 1980s pop band A-Ha; the cheese slicer; or painter Edvard Munch.

In honor of the 150th birthday anniversary of the latter of that bunch, tourism body Visit Norway is asking people to create their own version of Munch's most famous work, "The Scream," in video form.

It's no accident that we included Up Helly Aa, the self-dubbed "Europe's largest fire festival" in our master list of crazy fun things to do in 2013.

The festival, which has been officially running since the 1880s in Lerwick on the Scottish Shetland Islands, has its roots in an uproarious celebration for sailors and soldiers returning home after weeks at sea.

When we first spot Gentetsu Maeshiro, he's way down Sunset Beach, a stick figure bent over by the shore.

It's mid-afternoon and my wife and I are among a handful of people enjoying this long stretch of sand on the east side of Ishigaki, one of the southernmost islands in the southernmost part of Japan, Okinawa.

We pass a couple from Saitama, north of Tokyo, who just rented an inflatable ring to go floating in the East China Sea.

"What do you think of this place?" I ask them.

"It's so pretty," the young woman replies, looking at the turquoise water.

In a café in Bangalore, a comedian leads off with a joke about Kingfisher Airlines stewardesses, and gets mild titters from the audience.

"The men are smiling," he teases.

The comic, Sanjay Manaktala, then tells a story about dressing up as a police officer to play out a sexy fantasy with an Indian girlfriend: "I told her 'You've been a naughty girl.' She said, 'Oh my god! Here's a hundred bucks.'"

This time, the crowd erupts into a roar, the bribery reference, a common problem within India's police force, hitting its mark.

According to the Construction Pipeline Report released in November 2012 by hotel research firm STR Global, 1,767 hotels are currently under development in the Asia-Pacific region, with 667 hotels expected to open in 2013.

That's a lot of beds.

More than half of the hotels in property empire Starwood's development books have Asian addresses, while other big names like Accor, InterContinental Hotels and Hilton Worldwide, are also aggressively expanding in the East. So are smaller regional boutique brands.
