Toasting Tsingtao in Qingdao: China’s beach-lined beer city

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 09:10 PM PDT

by Steve Madiwen

Probably the most-frequently mispronounced Chinese city in English, Qingdao was China's default beach resort before Hainan started making waves two decades ago.

But Qingdao -- which was briefly a German colony at the turn of the 20th century -- has one thing Hainan can't offer: beer, good beer, barrel upon barrel of it.

With the opening of Qingdao International Beer Festival (August 11-26), this is the season to enjoy both Qingdao and Tsingtao.

We sought out the best of "China's Munich."

Michelin magic for less in Japan Restaurant Week

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 01:00 PM PDT

When is a week not a week? Why, when it's the 17 days of this summer's Japan Restaurant Week (JRW), of course; it runs from August 17-September 2.

The twice-yearly event is based on the notion of expanding the customer base for the near-250 participating restaurants across the country.

Of those, the vast majority -- over 160 -- is in or near Tokyo, although there are a handful as far north as Sapporo and as far west as Fukuoka.

Regardless of location, all restaurants have to toe the JRW party line and lay on cut-price menus to attract new diners.

Lunch sets start at ¥1,575 (US$20), which is barely more than one would pay in a decent Tokyo diner on any given day anyway.

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 11:10 AM PDT

by Pam Grout

"The Avengers" recently leapt tall buildings to the No. 3 spot on the list of highest-grossing films of all time, passing "The Dark Knight" as the top film ever adapted from a comic book.

But what we want to know is what do superheroes do when they're not battling the forces of evil?

Using our superpowers of investigative journalism, we found the resorts and hotels where superheroes go to chill.

The Incredible Hulk: SHA Wellness Clinic, Costa Blanca, Spain

HulkEnough room to swing a truck.
Having just celebrated his 50th birthday, this funny, fearsome olive-hued natural disaster should probably enroll in an anti-stress program at SHA Wellness Clinic in Costa Blanca, Spain.

Although it hasn't worked so well for 50-something TV tycoon Simon Cowell, another regular at the discreet mountainside retreat that overlooks both the Mediterranean Sea and Sierra Helada National Park, it could aid in overcoming the blast of gamma radiation that turns the Hulk into a furious engine of destruction.
