Introducing the Vacation Nazi

by James Durston

James Durston editorThere are two types of traveler -- the organized and the non-organized.

The organized traveler is basically my mom.

She books her flights two months in advance, she has a long-term reciprocal cat-feeding agreement with the neighbor and somewhere about her person there is always secreted a usable length of toilet paper.

The other type of traveler is carefree and flip-flop rich.

He pre-books the first flight and nothing else, has a long-term agreement with Western Union (via dad) and about his neck there is always draped a tassel-lined length of Arabian scarf.

Drink up: 5 of Tokyo's freshest summer sips

The searing heat and soul-crushing humidity of Tokyo summers can be hard to handle. This, we know.

Fortunately, the city has plenty of stylish bars providing air-conditioned respite and expertly mixed fruity cocktails to make the season more bearable.

All drinks listed are subject to availability and come and go like the seasons themselves. We could say similar things about the prices. Feel free to ask for a suggestion -- they're all good.

Oak Door Bar

Nothing says summer like a good mojito.

The Oak Door Bar on the sixth floor of the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi was one of the first places in Tokyo to popularize fresh-fruit mojitos and they're still as good as ever -- available in a rainbow array of flavors from raspberry to ume.

What and where to eat during the heat wave in Seoul this week

Korea isn't coping well with this heat wave.

Hundreds have been rushed to the hospital and the death toll has reached 10 as the country entered the 10th consecutive tropical day, with daily highs hitting 35 C five days in a row.

Power blackouts have been occurring all around the country, leading Korea Electric Power Company to issue a power shortage warning this morning.

While the heat wave is expected to continue into the middle of the week, today is the official hottest day of the year (malbok) according to the lunar calendar.

Best dishes for the heat

The seeming contrariness of the traditional Korean custom of "yi-yeol-chi-yeol" (fighting fire with fire) dictates that no baths should be taken on the hottest days in order to preserve energy, while certain foods should be eaten to replenish the body's energy levels and health.

In pictures: Fading fragrance of Kannauj, India's perfume capital

by Divya Dugar

Growing up in India, I had always associated seasons with smells.

White jasmine (motiya) and vetiver (khus) were summer smells.

Mitti attar, which captures the scent of wet earth, makes me dream of an impending monsoon.

Heena and musk attar were for winter, with their heat-generating properties.

In search of these childhood scents, I ended up on a trip to a dusty little Indian town in the state of Uttar Pradesh -- Kannauj, India's perfume capital.
