Daegu IAAF World Athletics Championships in pictures

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 11:51 PM PDT

The 13th International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Daegu is coming to a close this weekend, marking the end of another round of crazed sports fever, and Daegu's brief tenure as Korea's hottest travel destination.

Some 7,000 athletes, family members and foreign media flew in just for the championships, in addition to 34,000 foreign spectators, according to local committee organizers.

And as with all athletics championships, expectations were at boiling point and drama has been rampant each day.

Here are some of the best athletes on the planet, at their finest.

Japan has robots in just about every flavor you can imagine. There are 'bots to care for the elderly and 'bots to cook you ramen. There are even robots to belt out the latest pop tunes.

But what if you prefer your entertainment a little bit more on the traditional side? Well, Japan has a robot for that as well. You guessed that, right?

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 07:14 PM PDT

China's two new dedicated aerobatics teams -- "Red Eagle" (红鹰, aka "Red Falcon") and "Sky Wing" (天之翼) -- took to the sky in their first official demonstration at the aerospace open day above Changchun's Da Fang Shen Airport yesterday.

"Red Eagle" flew K-8 training aircraft while "Sky Wing" pilots put PT-6 primary trainers through their daring paces.

Established in March 2011, these are the first aerobatic teams to be set up in China since 1962 when the Ba Yi demonstration team took wing.

What's the quickest way to board a plane?

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 01:56 AM PDT

Airlines have raced to find the fastest way to board a plane for years, and with good reason. Less time spent on boarding can translate into cash.

Studies have shown that an airline can save up to US$30 per flight for every minute cut from boarding.

An astrophysicist thinks he has now found the most efficient way to get passengers on board.

Dr. Jason Steffen, an astrophysicist at Fermi National Laboratory in Illinois, suggests that loading passengers by alternating rows, starting from the back of the plane, is quickest. When loading people in a row, travelers in window seats file in first, then middle seats, followed by aisle seats.

6 best places to watch sports in Seoul

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 10:00 PM PDT

As the Samsung Lions' formidable closer Oh Seung-hwan slings curveballs toward Lotte Giants' slugger Lee Dae-ho in the bottom of the ninth, many zealous baseball fans in Seoul find themselves glued to smartphone screens on the metro or watching the game on flat-screen TVs in their living rooms. But isn't a game-winning change-up much more satisfying when there's a shattered Busan fan to heckle?

Perhaps sports bars -- and the obnoxious fans inherently associated with an NFL or EPL upbringing -- are most often found in Western cities. But Seoul, the host of some of the world's largest sports competitions, has evolved into a major athletics hub.

iReport: A temple of calm in the eye of the Bangkok storm

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:58 PM PDT

"My passion is to show how fascinating Bangkok looks off the tourist tracks and how Thais manage their daily lives," says German iReporter Holger Bauer. Here, Holger shares his experiences at Wat Bowon Niwet.

Wat Bowon Niwet Vihara Rajavaravihara, a Buddhist temple off most tourists' radars, is located on Thanon Bowon Niwet and Thanon Phra Sumen, close to the backpacker area of Khao San Road.

This stunning temple, interveined by small canals (khlongs) and plenty of trees and flowers, provides visitors with a rare piece of calm in otherwise buzzing Bangkok.

世界上最性感的口音

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:00 PM PDT

Why Mumbaikars hire private investigators

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 02:58 PM PDT

There are some people who don't like private detectives.

Mumbai's leading celebrity divorce lawyer got sniffy about introducing me to one, and my top cop friend said he runs a mile from these characters.

Call them gumshoes, sleuths, Sherlocks or snoops, mythologize them in countless comic strips and pulp fiction -- but when you want to know whether you're marrying a suitable boy or who your wife's been cuckolding you with, Mumbai's shadowy subculture of private investigators provides succour.

The trinity of Mumbai investigators

Ashok Bhatt the 41-year-old owner of a large and flashy security agency, operates at the very top of the heap, heading a kind of super-cruiser surveillance and protection outfit.

Mount Aso and me: How I risked death on a Japanese volcano

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 02:55 PM PDT

Mount Aso

By now, we surely all know that Tokyo's great for hiking, but what to do when you've scaled all the peaks in the capital's foothills, quaffed all the beer for sale on their slopes and run the Chuo-sen trains ragged in your muddy boots?

Tired of the same old local trails, I decided to look a little farther afield and found myself fascinated with 1,592-meter Mount Aso in central Kyushu.

With jagged peaks, volcanic boulders, and steep inclines, it's about as hardcore a hike as you're going to get without having to rope up.

Oh, and did I mention it's the largest active volcano in Japan? Double hardcore.
