Posted: 16 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

It's a huge business and it's getting bigger.

This year's Comic Exhibition kicked off at the Taipei World Trade Center, August 15, at 10 a.m., ushering in thousands of visitors who had lined up for hours to get an early look at the merchandise and special exhibits.

The annual Taipei Comic Exhibition is one of the must-attend events of the year for anime consumers in Asia, with elaborately dressed fans snapping up everything from the latest issues to bedding to stationery, all emblazoned with manga characters.

The biggest pull for fans, however, is getting to meet the artists.

This year, they'll have a chance to talk with various graphic artists, animation directors and voice actors -- 22 from Japan and 25 from Taiwan.

More than 430 booths have been set up at the fair, which is expected to generate revenues of NT$200 million ($6.7 million), up from last year's revenue of NT$180 million ($6 million), reported the Taipei Times. According to the event organizers, the visitor count was more than 550,000 last year.

Pirate-themed series "One Piece," the most popular Japanese manga series of all time, has its own special exhibition this year's fair.
