Stand and slurp at Tokyo's railway noodle bars

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 08:01 PM PST

To slurp or not to slurp -- that definitely isn't the question when you're sucking it up like a local
Article Page

First things first -- noisy slurping when downing your soba, udon, or ramen in Japan is all part and parcel of enjoying your noodles the way the locals do.

Call it authentic bad manners if you like.

The problem for many visitors is that no matter how long they stay, the "skill" required to slurp noodles is something they can never quite master.

It's a back of the mouth thing, quite unlike the front of the mouth soup slurping frowned upon in the West.

World’s best-dressed nations -- and how to fit in

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 10:02 AM PST

Never again be daunted by the prospect of traveling to a sartorially superior land
Article Page

First impressions count. That, no doubt, is why few first dates take place in lederhosen.

For the traditional Germans among us, no offense intended. But there is something about a sharply cut suit, or a well-matched sweater-pant combo, that hits the style spots small leather shorts and braces can't.

Of course in a Turkish steam bath even a pair of board shorts would be considered over-dressed. But that's an extreme we needn't worry about here.

So which country has the best-dressed people?

France's castle capital can be daunting, but not if you know where to find the real gems
Article Page

Who doesn't love a good castle? But you can have too much of a good thing ...

With more than 3.3 million visitors per year, the group of 42 châteaux that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Loire Valley is one of France's most popular tourist destinations outside Paris itself.

While all of them are beautifully maintained and culturally significant, it's impossible to see more than a handful without becoming castled-out pretty darn tout de suite.
