Hacking demo at conference may have inspired hotel break-ins

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 12:01 AM PST

About 400 million hotel rooms worldwide use keycard locks with "glaring security vulnerability"
Article Page

The security of hotel rooms is being scrutinized following a spate of break-ins at hotels in Texas.

A 27-year-old man has been charged as a suspect for a hotel room robbery at a Hyatt-run franchise hotel in Houston, according to a report in Forbes written by Andy Greenberg and published this week.

The story links the hotel break-in to a widely publicized hacking demonstration earlier this year.

7 luxury vacations in Mexico

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 11:26 PM PST

The beach-camping crowd can still scrape by on a few pesos a week, but if you want to splash out, here's how to do it right
Article Page

Mexico has always had all the elements of an upscale vacation destination: glittering white Caribbean beaches and wave-crashed Pacific shores, thriving mega-cities, pre-Columbian ruins, world-class cuisine and an ever-expanding selection of excellent hotels.

The opulence isn't just for visitors, though. Mexico boasts the 13th-largest economy in the world, with an upwardly mobile moneyed class that includes Earth's richest man in corporate magnate Carlos Slim.

The test flight was conducted by Air China, the country's national carrier. The airline's Airbus A319 took off at 6 a.m. from Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, and arrived at Daocheng at 7:30 a.m.

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 04:32 PM PST

Stuck in an eating rut? Some of the city's top foodies and celebrities offer opinions on where to find the hottest plates in town
Article Page

With incredible street food and a vibrant dining scene punctuated by glitzy new openings, we Singapore diners are a pampered lot.

But separating the great from the mediocre can be a time-consuming, if thankless, task.

That's why we prefer to defer to foodies and in-the-know personalities for advice on favorite haunts –- Violet Oon, Vernetta Lopez, Hossan Leong, Dick Lee, Willin Low and myself, no less.

If you're looking for new ideas, herewith is our loot.

Just be thankful to the forgetful owners.

Every day, millions of items are orphaned by travelers at airports and hotels. Some weirder than the others.

We talked to hotels and airports worldwide -- these are the weirdest forgotten items they've found so far.

Europe's must-see new blockbuster art events

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 08:01 AM PST

Culture vultures rejoice: The Continent has an embarrassment of riches for the wandering aesthete
Article Page

Wearily traipsing around an art gallery is a surefire way to kill the vibe on a weekend away.

Samey paintings, stuffy rooms and cafés with prices to make you weep can combine to make the best of us wish to be anywhere else.

Of course, that's if you just plump for any old art space listed in your guidebook and hope for the best. May we suggest a smarter approach over the next few months, in that case?

The fine art of a perfect cup of coffee

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST

Does this tiny Tokyo café serve the world's best brew? Mind your manners if you want to find out
Article Page

The Irukaya coffee shop has a rigid code of conduct and you only get one shot.

I blew mine just by dialing the number.

Owner Hiroshi Kiyota keeps a blog on which he describes the kinds of people that will never set foot inside his reservation-only shop.

I'd read the website and studied the rules: no photos, even of the facade; no groups larger than two; order at least one drink per hour; no talking to Kiyota while he's making coffee; no smoking; no mobile phones.

I could go on. The website does.
