Places people want to brag about the most

Theme parks, sports stadiums, and city squares are among the most popular destinations that people checked into on Facebook in 2013.

As part of its annual review, Facebook has listed the 25 places that users most frequently check into around the world. The list includes the top checked in places, excluding transportation hubs, in 25 of the countries with the most active Facebook users in 2013.

Facebook blog post says it looked at which places generated the most check-ins in 2013 and used the data to create global and country-level rankings.

Travel is big business for the global social network, which confirmed that travel continues to be the second most talked-about life event on Facebook after relationship updates.

Facebook released a similar list last year on the top 10 checked into place by country.

The 2013 list includes four Disney theme parks in California, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Paris; three sports arenas in Vancouver, Sweden and Melbourne and a steakhouse in Buenos Aires.

Beijing beer boom: The capital's craftiest pubs

Posted: 09 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

It's a good time to be a lager lover. A brewing boom means complex craft ales can be found all over the city

For years, going out for a beer in Beijing meant settling for tasteless, mass-produced lagers.

The drought has come to an end.

A number of local brewpubs are now serving complex craft ales in pub atmospheres throughout the city.

Though the current beer boom was kicked off by expats eager for a taste of home, brewing classes and homebrew associations have spurred the growth of local Chinese beer aficionados, whose brews appeal to a more domestic palate.

Beijing's best brewpubs range from boutique pubs to those that brew and bottle for outside venues and aim to make it big.

Great Leap Brewing

Great Leap Brewing is credited with moving Beijing's beer scene forward. Great Leap made its name brewing beers in a  rustic courtyard that's been around since the days of Old Beijing.

Nowadays, the hype surrounds its second location.

Closer to modernity, Great Leap's Brewing Taproom is scaled up with plenty of polished wood, shiny fermenting tanks and a state-of-the-art tap system pouring 12 beer varieties.

The expanded size reflects the status: bearded owner Carl Setzer is credited with kick-starting Beijing's current beer boom.

Much like their sweet Honey Ma Ale (it's laced with local honey from the Great Wall and a touch of numbing Sichuan peppercorns), this idiosyncratic brewery brings the best of Western styles under the eaves of the historic Eastern city.

More on CNN: For Beijing's best food, hit the hutongs

Slow Boat Brewing

Drink or leave. At Slowboat's flagship taproom, the focus is on beer alone. Half the appeal of Slow Boat's taproom is wandering down a hutong alleyway to find it.

The bar is hidden for a reason.

Slow Boat started out as a simple lease-a-keg operation, putting its ever-growing list of ales and stouts on menus of other bars and restaurants around town.

Their flagship taproom sidesteps competition by putting them all in one place.

Rows of tables in the unadorned one-room pub resemble an alcoholic canteen. The focus is on the drink and drink alone.

Beers range from bold and rich Two-Six Oatmeal Stout to fruity, hoppy Flying Whale IPA.

Capital Brewing Company (京A)

Capital's 'gypsy brewers' are known for their quirky beer varieties, like watermelon and mandarin orange. The duo that took up residence in the spare room of Beijing barbecue restaurant The Big Smoke describe themselves as "gypsy brewers."

For months they were balancing corporate gigs with a hobby that found them brewing in apartments and commercial kitchens.

What resulted was a number of small batches that reflected the duo's quirkiness. Rather than stick with a standard wheat beer, they jazzed it up with watermelon and mandarin orange varieties.

What comes out of their laboratory and into the glasses can be as conventional as sharp pale ale or innovative as wasabi beer.

N Beer

Welcome to beer-vana.

The popularity of foreign-owned breweries has inspired a generation of domestic Chinese brewers, notably locally prolific Tipsy Face Brewing.

Founder Yin Hai, president of the Chinese Homebrewer's Association, joined forces with beer fanatic and bar owner Xiao Biar to lay the stones for their home base -- N Beer -- beside the noodle shops on Huguosi Snack Street.

What's the vibe like?

Start with a wall of silver taps pouring brews from around the country.

Add the largest beer fridge in the city with bottles from all over the world.

Top it off with a funky soundtrack playing to a beer-nerd crowd.

Tipsy Face supplies a majority of the taps at N Beer.

The rest are rounded out by craft beer from as far away as Chengdu and Nanjing. Or even from passersby: the beer factory offers home brewing classes with customized labels.

Malty Dog

Laid back Malty Dog is a quick stroll away from Beijing's Drum and Bell Towers. Malty Dog's one-room hutong setup keeps a chiller vibe than its competitors -- dim lighting, quirky playlists and no-fuss décor swing with the list of brews scribbled on a blackboard.

While there are a good number of imported bottles in the fridge, eight or nine homebrews are regularly available.

They're creative brews that range from a malty beast of a Black IPA to a spot-on British bitter.

It's a different scene than the owner's other bar, Mai, up the street, which shakes cocktails in a hole-in-the-wall aesthetic.

Malty Dog is growing in name for is its folk music performances.

Walk through the doors on certain nights and you'll be greeted with twanging guitars and fiddles. A number of expat groups are using the pub as a miniature performance space.

Üdvözöljük to Hungarian, one of Europe’s most curious languages

Posted: 08 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST

"It's like singing," says one fan who can't speak a word of it

Arriving in Hungary one damp Easter Sunday a couple of years ago, I was greeted by a sign at the train station reading: "Üdvözöljük Miskolcon!"

Beneath it was the translation: "Welcome to Miskolc!"

Those were to be the last three recognizable words that I read or heard in the following 24 hours.

I quickly realized that the traveler's usual trick of listening out for familiar-sounding words wasn't going to be very productive in Hungary.

Because while the Hungarian language does use Latin characters, that's where its kinship to virtually any other European tongue ends.

Few words in Hungarian, including place names, are easily recognizable to foreigners.

All Greek to me?

"All Hungarian" might be a better expression for something truly incomprehensible.

More: 11 things to know before visiting Hungary

Hungarian in translation: Enjoy it while you can."I'm headed for, um ... "

As a traveler, you know you have a problem when you can't even pronounce the name of the place you want to go to.

Budapest?

Looks straightforward -- although in fact Hungarians pronounce the "s" as a "sh," so it's actually something like "Buda-pesht."

Alright, not too tough.

But Miskolc?

Hm.

Applying that first rule and another -- that "c" is pronounced like "ts" -- gives you "Mish-kolts."

Excellent! You might actually end up at your destination.

But the city of Nyíregyháza?

And as for Székesfehérvár …

Hungarian is unrelated to any of its neighboring language groups -- Germanic, Slavic or Romance -- which between them encompass 95% of what the rest of Europe speaks.

Read: Buda vs. Pest -- one city, two personalities

"Er, you'd like a lift to Europe?"Uncertain origins

There are various theories about Hungarian's origins, but its grammar and vocabulary suggest links to Finnish (and its close cousin, Estonian) and a handful of languages spoken in Russia -- together known as the Finno-Ugric languages.

Yet Hungary is not, like Finland, on the edge of Europe but slap-bang in the middle of it.

For that reason it's traded words with some of the continent's big linguistic players.

Hungarian has provided English with a few notable words, for instance, coach, saber, paprika and, of course, goulash (though be warned this is normally a soup, rather than a stew, in Hungary).

And although it's borrowed some English and other foreign words in turn, there are fewer than you might expect and you won't come across them -- or recognize them when you do -- very often.

Sea of words

To visit Hungary is to immerse yourself in a melodic sea of unfamiliar and sometimes rather long words.

Dr. István Lanstyák is a professor of linguistics at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, and one of the millions of native Hungarian speakers living in the countries surrounding Hungary.

Hungarian has borrowed some English words ... just not many. He says that all the long words in Hungarian are partly due to the historic influence of German, which loves to stick shorter words together to create enormously long ones.

Lebensabschnittpartner, for example, is a German word for "lover."

Romantic, huh?

More: Paprika -- a primer on Hungary's spicy obsession

Twisty tongue

As for Hungarian, numerous word endings defining things such as case, possession and number get stuck together to create some formidable tongue-twisters.

Even if you can't understand the result, it can still sound rather pleasant -- one Hungarian I spoke to said her (non-Hungarian) boyfriend described her conversations with her mother as "singing."

The melody of the language is actually formalized in a rule that requires different forms for each word ending depending on the length of the preceding syllables, in order to maintain "vowel harmony."

It's as if in English we were obliged to speak in rhyming couplets.

Young speak English

Dr. Lanstyák says that, as a rule, younger Hungarians will speak some English, while middle-aged people often have only their native tongue -- they might have refused to learn Russian under communism or have since forgotten it.

The older generation will often speak German as a second language.

Alas, many public transport, post office and even tourism sector employees fall into the middle category.

Don't despair: The consensus among visitors and foreign residents, at least in Budapest, seems to be that although you may not understand them, enough of them will still understand you.

Read: Budapest's best 'ruin bars'

A Hungarian kiosk -- selling everything you want but can't pronounce.Show map, point

A couple of post-grad students I spoke to who were studying in Budapest said that they survived there barely knowing any of the language -- one admitted she knew "about five words."

Their advice? Carry a map -- asking for directions can be difficult with the tricky pronunciation of Hungarian names.

Dr. Lanstyák has another suggestion.

Hungarian has more international words than it might first appear, he says.

Restaurants, for instance, normally carry the unguessable moniker "vendéglő" or "étterem," but Hungarians also use the word "resti" (pronounced "resh-tee").

So try pronouncing a few English, German or French words creatively, the professor says.

Or mime.

In Miskolc, I used impassioned gestures to board a tram in the city, find a room and order a meal.

But perhaps I was lucky with that sign.

Visitors to the city are now greeted with a new one -- in Old Hungarian.

Miscolk's "new" -- make that old -- welcome sign.

Macau nightlife: The city's 3 top clubs face off

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 01:11 AM PST

Partyers in Macau can be split into three groups: those who travel there for big name DJs at Club Cubic; the local well-heeled crowd who compete for attention at China Rouge; and a mix of tourists and locals looking for a big night at Lion's Bar till the small hours.

We've pitted the three stalwarts of Macau nightlife against each other and stacked up their best assets.

More: 10 must-try Macau foods

Club Cubic

Being a Cubican means partying with Steve Aoki in the most extravagant club in Macau. The Club

Macau's biggest club in both hype and space, Club Cubic is a 2,800-square-meter monster of curved walls, colored light projections and champagne-peddling.

The HK$100 million ($13 million) interior was designed by Bosco Lam and includes a bar area with Gothic styling, a two-tier performance stage and five VIP rooms, each in a different theme.

Asia's only Perrier-Jouët champagne bar is found within, dispensing rare PJ vintages.

Wow factor: 5/5

Club Cubic is a fully functioning performance venue hosting some of the biggest names in the industry.

Since opening in April 2011 with headlining act Flo Rida, the club has brought to its stage PSY, LMFAO, Steve Aoki and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The latest draw is TABOO, a limited-run cabaret concept by Franco Dragone of Saltimbanco and House of Dancing Water fame, which presents world-class circus skills with a sexy tone (lots of leather).

China Rouge

Is this a club or the set of Wong Ka Wai's "In the Mood for Love?"The Club

A nightlife venue that attempts to do it all, China Rouge combines an art gallery, chill lounge, cabaret stage and raucous club all in one.

At half the size of Club Cubic, China Rouge packs a punch in a relatively modest space.

It's billed as an exclusive members-only club, but non-members who arrive looking like a million bucks will be considered for entrance (no flip flops, shorts or sleeveless shirts allowed for men).

Many performers take the stage for short sets throughout the night at China Rouge, ranging from singers to contortionists.

A quiet lounge area offers competently made classic cocktails.

Wow factor: 5/5

Alan Chan, one of Asia's most respected designers, did the interiors at China Rouge and his passion for this project is evident.

Chan strikes a difficult-to-achieve balance between attention-grabbing stunts (lots of depictions of nipples) and pure glamor.

Taking cues from art deco and 1920s Shanghai, Chan has filled the space with deep shades of red and plenty of lattice screens framing stunning works of art by leading contemporary artists, commissioned for the club.

Photographer Chen Man's interpretation of "The Heavenly Kings" is installed near the entrance, greeting guests with powerful depictions of nude goddesses.

Chinese-Kiwi artist Deng Xinli painted a surreal "Goddess in Cloudy Ship" that fills an entire wall.

One of the cocktail bars is decked out in illustrations by famed Hong Kong comic artist Ma Wing-shing, using stained glass.

Write home about: 3.5/5

Whether you like it or not, you'll be gaping at the risque art in China Rouge and a chat with the knowledegable staff helps you take home an informed decision on whether it was any good or not.

Total score: 8.5/10

Lion's Bar

Doesn't get more luxurious than ordering a "Winston" cocktail at Lion's Bar.The Club

The MGM's signature bar and Macau's unofficial after-party venue, Lion's Bar is a gaudy party hall with a live stage and well-stocked bar that serves the "Winston," the Guinness World Record holder for the most expensive cocktail at MOP 94,880 ($11,880), made with Croizet 1858.

Wow factor: 3/5

Lion's Bar is known for its amazing cover band and its crowd on the dance floor, manes loose and hands waving like they just don't care.

It's where you go to down Long Island Iced Tea and sing along with the band because they'll keep playing hits that everybody knows and loves.

Write home about: 5/5

You'll wake up remorseful over drinking too much and using that pickup line/doing that dance move you swore you'd never repeat after some infamous incident in 1989.

Total score: 8/10

Lion's Bar in MGM Macau, Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Nape, Macau; +853 8802 2375
