Most of us cringe just hopping in and out of the shower during the bone-chilling Korean winter, but for some adventurous (if masochistic) surfers, winter marks the best time to smear some jelly on their board and jump into the sea.

To kick off the new year's first Weekender issue, the Korea Herald published a roundup of the five most popular winter surfing spots in the country.

"Pohang is a good spot for surfing -- in winter especially, under the right conditions the waves can be world-class," surfer Min Kyung-shik told the paper, adding that waves are bigger and stronger in Korea during the winter, due to the winds from the north.

So you wanna dance?

Sydney's got plenty of nightclubs, but where's the party really at? Which venues have groovy dance floors?

To help you find your groove, here's a selection of Sydney's best clubs catering to the dance music scene.

Chinese Laundry

The Slip Inn, owned by Justin Hemmes' Merivale Group, includes the basement club The Slip Inn that focuses on quality underground music.

There are three eclectically designed indoor areas including the small Laundry and the even smaller Cave. It's intimate and often hot, but always fun. With summer here, you can take a breather in the Tuscan-themed Garden Bar, which becomes another dance floor for special events.

Eat breakfast like a Mumbaikar

I like Mumbai in the morning. Not because it is the quietest place on earth and definitely not because I am a morning person. But because 8:30 a.m. has just enough buzz, offering an essence of the city without the overwhelming chaos.

It is also a great time to eat in the city.

Apart from the food being fresher, Mumbai's local breakfast options are an assortment of cultures, inherited from a long and luscious culinary melting pot.

Many local dishes are modern adaptations derived from the Kolis, a fishing community said to be the original inhabitants of Mumbai.

Others are borrowed from our friendly neighbors, like the Gujarati and Udipi foods that are extremely popular amongst Mumbaikars from all backgrounds.

It's an old saying, but it still holds true: "Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you."

Observe the behavior and attitudes of any child, and you'll see that children learn most from what they see and not what they're told.

This is particularly apparent with children on the road. Being away from home ground tests one's resilience, adaptability and response to new and unfamiliar things and reveals one's mettle.

Australia prides itself on its sporting prowess. It's a nation that likes to compete and likes to win.

When it comes to weird competitions, Aussies become even more determined to triumph.

In concept, if not always execution.

These 10 wacky events are worth journeying to in 2012.

1. Tunarama

Australia Day, January 26, Port Lincoln, South Australia

Fisherman in Port Lincoln brag not only about how big their fish are, but how far they can throw them.

At Tunarama, tunas weighing between eight and 10 kilograms are hurled in a fashion after Olympic hammers.

No wonder the current record of 37.23 meters belongs to former Olympian Sean Carlin.

Bangkok gun shops

If you have an itchy trigger finger while visiting Thailand it may be difficult to purchase a gun, but wealthy foreigners and Thais who live here can now enjoy their weapon of choice thanks to the recent lifting of a ban imposed in Bangkok last year.

Tourists can, however, buy custom-made leather holsters and other accessories at the estimated 80 weapons stores along Burapha Road, just east of the Sala Chalerm Krung Royal Theatre, where the vast majority of Bangkok's gun shops are located.

Most of the shops have been in business for more than 40 years and welcome walk-in customers, but may discourage photographs of their deadly arsenals.

1. MV Stella Australis, Chile

Ever wanted to jog around Cape Horn but thought it was impossible? Well, it's not.

Brand-new ship (well, in cruise ship terms any ship just past her first birthday is still brand-new) Stella Australis plies the glacier-lined route between Punta Arenas (Chile) and Ushuaia (Argentina).

Show map at bottom of page
