Call for legalization of travel-related tipping in China

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 01:38 AM PDT

travel tips

Major Chinese travel website Ctrip.com recently announced the launch of a "travel tipping project" on all domestic tours.

The new plan will entitle its staff to accept service fees during domestic trips as an official part of their salary.

The Shanghai-based bilingual site hopes to establish an incentive system through the project that will encourage its tourist guides to deliver better services.

The Nasdaq-listed company is also calling for the government to lift the ban on travel tipping in China.

Tips officially prohibited in China

Mainland Chinese travelers aren't in the habit of giving tips. In fact, tipping is officially prohibited by the central government.

"Oi You!" Banksy's street art on Sydney Harbour's Cockatoo Island

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 09:30 PM PDT

He's perhaps the world's most famous anonymous person.

Banksy's fame comes with a street-art oath that his true identity won't be revealed. His works, though, are collected by some of the world's most famous faces, including Brad Pitt and David Beckham. His work "Keeping it Spotless" sold for nearly $2 million in 2008.

But Banksy remains a faceless activist and subversive born from the Bristol underground, pulling off such bold stunts as lining Israel's West bank wall with nine of his works in 2005.

Scoot Airlines: Not your usual airline

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 09:11 PM PDT

"An airline with a different attitude. People with a different attitude. Scootitude."

The yet undefined "scootitude" is what Scoot Airlines CEO Campbell Wilson is banking on to challenge rivals when it begins flying in mid-2012.

Intangible as it may sound, Wilson went on to elaborate that the name [and brand] "conveys spontaneity, movement, informality and a touch of quirkiness."

Alexis Ong: 「

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 03:00 PM PDT

8 secret acupoints to cure travel ills

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 03:00 PM PDT

acupressure points for travelers

After stowing the passport and the traveler's checks, it's straight to the airport pharmacy for most long-haul fliers for the pills, tonics and remedies used to alleviate aches and ills.

But there is another choice -- acupressure.

Acupressure is the practice of pressing or massaging certain points on the body said to stimulate self-curative abilities.

For each of the points descibed below, you may need to press or rub the point in 20-30 second intervals for up to 10 minutes before the effect is felt. You may also need to use it repeatedly throughout the day.

Play around with what works best for you.

Kyoto without the crowds: Escape like a local

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 02:55 PM PDT

Kyoto

Japan's ancient capital Kyoto draws crowds of visitors at all times of the year with its sheer abundance of attractions. Countless temples, traditional gardens and Imperial villas appeal to tourists of all stripes.

Still, it can sometimes be a little much -- whisper it quietly, but there are far too many interesting places to even try and pack them all in on one trip and far too many eager travelers trying to do so anyway.

Instead, insiders often prefer to explore some of the less-frequented but equally intriguing sites in Kyoto's mountainous suburbs.

Here are five must-see destinations just a short train or bus ride away from central Kyoto.

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Eye in the sky: Climbing the new Tokyo Sky Tree

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 01:24 AM PDT

Tokyo Sky Tree

I don't often feel short in Tokyo -- I'm practically a giant here at 190 centimeters. But standing under the new Tokyo Sky Tree makes me feel positively miniscule.

At 634 meters, the Sky Tree is now the tallest tower in the world. It's as imposing as Godzilla but multiple monsters in height. So, when owner Tobu Railway invited press to this steel colossus in Sumida Ward near Asakusa, I jumped at the chance.

I'd seen it from afar many times, but was still hit by an ant-versus-mountain awe I got at the bottom. Donning a hard hat, I walked through a forest of giant steel tubes -- the Sky Tree's exterior steel mesh -- into the unfinished lobby.

Hong Kong protests become a tourist attraction

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 10:04 PM PDT

Hong Kong protests

Hong Kong is number eight on Lonely Planet's list of top 10 cities to visit in 2012.

The popular travel guide recommends Hong Kong for its exotic attractions, such as the Star Ferry, Chinese fortune-telling and walled villages.

But mostly, they like Hong Kong protest rallies.

Lonely Planet calls Hong Kong "China's most liberated city" and predicts that 2012 will be an exciting year for the city as it continues the push for more democracy.

The guide describes Hong Kong rallies as a reflection of "vibrant indie music and literary scenes," with a host of creative performances by protestors catching the eye.

Crisis Chic: Bangkok blog takes a humorous look at the city's floods

Thailand floods

A new blog is using a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to lighten the heavy atmosphere hanging over Bangkok as the city continues to battle rising waters in some areas.

Dubbed Crisis Chic, the Tumblr blog says "style shouldn't go out the window, just 'cause water's coming in."

Started by two British (Gaby Doman, Becky Wicks) and two U.S. expatriates (Brock Kuhlman, Joshua Johnson), Crisis Chic features humorous photos and captions of them in stylish outfits hanging around flood-hit areas -- often wearing snorkel gear.

The captions offer readers some "valuable" fashion tips.

spectacular natural wonders

Water, fire and ice have combined to make some of the most spectacular scenery in the world -- from giant crystal caves to mud volcanoes and rock formations that look like works of art.

If your office and daily commute aren't a fitting reminder of the extraordinary natural diversity of planet earth, get some inspiration from these incredible scenes.

1. Pulpit Rock, Preikestolen, Norway

With a 604-meter drop from a flat plateau down to Lysefjord with no safety railings, this is not a place for vertigo sufferers.

Keep well back from the edge and you can still enjoy the fantastic scenery over Kjerag peak, which itself drops 984 meters.
