Angry Birds theme park opens in China

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 04:25 AM PDT

Angry Birds addicts around the world may still be committed to the ultimate destruction of the game's irritating porcine rogues, but at a real-life Angry Birds theme park (愤怒的小鸟), Chinese gamers are already knocking over actual green pigs.

The Angry Birds theme park opened to the public on September 1 in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province in southeastern China.

The attraction is part of the larger Window of the World amusement park

The Angry Birds theme park facility was built as part of the park's monthlong Stress-reducing Festival.

Simulating the action of the viral computer game, players pull a real catapult and shoot Angry Birds plush toys at green piggy balloons placed around a toy brick fortress.

There's no doubt that this glorious little city is among the crème de la crème when it comes to tourism and sightseeing.

In fact, heaven help you if you've just landed in the city and Tweeted out something like, "Hi guyz m in Mumbai ... got 2 days 2 kill, any places u suggest? thxxx" –- be prepared to be inundated with suggestions for tourist hot spots, restaurants and travel packages.

Gallery: Super-sized action at King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 08:21 PM PDT

Buddhist monks, a massive fruit buffet and polo players from around the world helped launch the annual King's Cup Elephant Polo tournament in Hua Hin this week.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the event returned to the southern resort town following a three-year stint in Chiang Rai.

The charity event has raised US$300,000 to date, with funds used to care for more than 60 elephants and their mahouts at the Thai Elephant Conservation center in Lampang, in northern Thailand. Elephants are taken off the streets while they are still young, usually under 20 years of age. They're provided with a forested environment, food, veterinary check-ups and their mahouts are given a salary.

Tourism flatlines as visitors avoid Japan

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 08:01 PM PDT

Japan tourism is slumping

Close on six months after the March 11 disasters hit northeast Japan, the official numbers for overseas tourists visiting the country look even bleaker than expected.

According to the Japan Tourism Agency -- a part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism -- spending by incoming visitors in the April-June quarter was down 46.9 percent on a year earlier.

Chinese cash

In total, the foreign tourist buck was worth an insignificant ¥121 billion ($1.6 billion) in the quarter, most of it coming from near neighbors in Asia.

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 04:32 PM PDT

Andon Ryokan

Your pick: World's 50 most delicious foods

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 03:00 PM PDT

What are the world's most delicious foods? We thought we knew. Apparently we don't.

Our list of the World's 50 most delicious foods stimulated some impassioned debate about the conspicuous lack of French dishes and the merits of ketchup over mayonnaise.

"Ketchup? Pop Corn? Chips? Plenty of Thai but few Malay food? What about Chinese (Sichuan, Cantonese, etc)? No Brazilian or Argentinean?" queried commenter Max.

Aviation industry Emissions Trading Scheme

Starting next January, passengers on Asian airlines will likely have to pay an average of US$8 more for European routes due to taxes imposed to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Airlines account for two percent of global carbon emissions but "aviation's contribution to climate change is forecast to grow substantially in the future unless we act," blogged Connie Hedegaard, Commissioner for Climate Action at the European Union (EU).

How one Thai budget carrier keeps its flight attendants young and hot

"I get older, they stay the same age."

That of course is a classic line by Wooderson, Matthew McConaughey's smooth-talking character in "Dazed and Confused," referring to high school girls. But it could very well refer to Thailand's flight attendants too.

Australia, who the bloody hell are ya?

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 09:31 PM PDT

tourists

It's bloody expensive in Australia, and as much as Australians like to get the hell out on holidays, fewer foreign tourists are visiting.

Gone are the $5 all-you-can-eat seafood barbecues and $10 beds around the country. The beaches and unique outback remain, but resorts are stuck in the 1980s. But it goes to figure, as most haven't made a buck since then.

It seems tourists don't want to stay in apricot-colored hotels in north Queensland anymore, if they ever did.

Best Mumbai cafés for people-watching and eavesdropping

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 07:20 PM PDT

The night before I left for the French capital, a Parisian friend who is based in Mumbai gave me some advice -- choose your café wisely.

To know a city, she reasoned, one must befriend its cafés.

Even if you'd rather drink tea and eat cake; even if the coffee is underwhelming and over-brewed and even if that Wi-Fi remains promised.

Unlike bars that share a symbiotic relationship with alcohol, at cafés, it's the people that are important.

People walk into cafés not just for the coffee. They work, read, meet and network, dress up to be seen, or like this writer, watch and listen.

People-watching is a fine art.

New Yorkers know this, as do Londoners and especially Parisians.

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 05:00 PM PDT

(Made)

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Moon Jar
