Seoul Doll Fair 2011: Freaky and fantastical Posted: 11 Dec 2011 11:36 PM PST Stare at dolls that stare right back The annual Seoul Doll Fair is back for its fourth year, opening on December 23 at the Samsung-dong Coex, Hall A. Around 10,000 dolls made by hundreds of participating artists will be on display until January 2, 2012. To many, the word "dolls" brings to mind fuzzy beribboned teddy bears or a sweet-faced Raggedy Ann in calico -- i.e. toys -- but the works on display at the Seoul Doll Fair are a bit pricier than your average Barbie. "More than 90 percent of our dolls are handmade," said Seoul Doll Fair manager Shin Jong-hoon. "They range in price from a thousand to several hundred million won." The variety is as diverse as the price. |

Except when it's dished up by a trio of 20-something Chinese finance majors-turned-entrepreneurs who learnt to cook via the web. Shanghai residents have been flocking to The Sailors on buzzing Yongkang Lu since it opened at the end of November, lured by both the authentic fare and the chutzpah of its novice owners. The eight-seater is co-owned by three Fudan University finance major graduates: Sean Xue, Paul Zhu and Tommy Tang, all 25 years old. "We knew nothing about cooking, we learned everything from the Internet," explained Xue. |

"Eco," "green," "sustainable," "environmentally friendly": the growing litany of buzzwords that punctuate the path of righteous holidaymakers. "Tips for green traveling" are offered by lodges now deemed Mother Nature-compliant enough to carry the prefix "eco." Other establishments speak about organic this and that. But with all this emphasis on sustainability, aren't resorts and hotels in danger of neglecting what most of us go on holiday for -- good old-fashioned fun? Any resort that declares itself to be "employing grassroots practices" certainly sounds like you're opting into more of a muddy field-based, Woodstock experience than one of pampered R&R. |

Once the morsels are cooked they are slathered in various sauces and eaten immediately. Hot pot is the Chinese socio-gastro activity of choice. It is a low-maintenance meal that feeds a lot of people. Having to cook each piece of food individually before we can eat it turns hot pot into the slowest of slow food meals. Cooking time becomes bonding time. Besides, in the winter the steaming cooking pot doubles as a room heater. Where there's demand, there is crazy competition. Hong Kong hot pot restaurateurs try to out do each other with wackier combinations of broth-plus-meat each year. |
