It's known simply as the race that stops a nation.

Office workers conduct sweepstakes then go to bars. School kids gather around television sets. Not even government sits. Some parts of the country even have a public holiday. Roads are desolate, as Australia stops for three-and-half minutes to watch the annual running of the Melbourne Cup.

On the first Tuesday in November, 24 thoroughbreds charge 3,200 meters around Flemington Racecourse for the AU$6 million (US$6.42 million) purse.

At the track, 100,000 race-goers pack the stands, the grounds, corporate marquees, dressed up and sipping champagne -- a scene replicated at high-fashion luncheons around the country and around the world.

News Qantas flights would resume Monday came as cold relief for tens of thousands of frustrated travelers who have been left stranded around the world.

The self-inflicted grounding of 108 aircraft at 22 airports came without warning.

It may have lasting impacts on the brand from the point of view of whether travelers decide to use the airline.

While many travelers have vented their anger against the carrier on online forums and Twitter, on the streets of Sydney, the Qantas grounding is dominating discussion as some travelers vow to turn their backs on the national carrier.

iReporter Melvin Francisquini reckons that taking good photos requires a lot of patience. He shares these tips on taking great snapshots of Hong Kong:

"My tip is to not be quick with the click," says Francisquini who is an American currently living in Japan. "Enjoy the city and wait for the 'Aha!' moment you have inside your stomach."

Francisquini likes images of imposing icons, like a grand old junk or the IFC building, and advises avoiding crowds, "because they are inevitably going to ruin your shot." He also stays away from town on busy weekends.
