High-tech Tokyo tribute to Steve Jobs uses apps as candles Posted: 05 Oct 2011 11:37 PM PDT Following the death of former Apple Chairman Steve Jobs in California on Wednesday, fans in Tokyo are planning an unusual tribute at a candlelight vigil with a twist. The sunset event -- due to take place today, Thursday, at 5:19 p.m. in front of the Apple Store in Ginza -- will be illuminated not by actual candles, but by the screens of iPhones, iPads and iPods running a virtual candle application. Suitably geekyOrganizer Steve Nagata, a Tokyo-based Apple fan, told us how the idea came to him. "It was just a whim to do it at the Apple Store at sunset, so I tweeted it out right away," he explained. |
Suki Haeng: The best Thai dish you’ve never heard of Posted: 05 Oct 2011 07:44 PM PDT Most people in Bangkok are familiar with Thai-style sukiyaki (generally referred to as suki), a do-it-yourself hotpot associated with mall-bound family-friendly franchises such as MK or Coca. But a less common and arguably more delicious version of the dish is suki haeng, "dry" suki. Suki haeng saves you the trouble of all that dipping and cooking, and unites the essential elements of the dish -- wun sen (bean thread noodles), egg, vegetables (typically Napa cabbage, green onions and morning glory) and some sort of protein -- in a hot wok. |

We're drowning in our own filth. This is no exaggeration. It's estimated that Hong Kong residents, per capita, produce the most garbage of any place in the world. |

10 Melbourne Festival highlights Posted: 05 Oct 2011 12:58 PM PDT What makes Melbourne the cultural capital of Australia? "That's the cliché," says Melbourne Festival director Brett Sheehy. "But certainly something happened –- maybe it was the indoor culture. "What sets Melbourne apart from other Australian cities is the average woman and man on the street will say that arts and culture is a critical part of the town." Sheehy says the Melbourne Festival "will now do what hasn't been before." From October 6 through October 22, the festival brings together around 60 acts from different genres from around the world. All have one thing in common: protest and rebellion. |
