Smokers in Singapore to face harsher measures Posted: 14 Oct 2011 02:50 AM PDT Smokers in Singapore may soon have fewer public places to light up, and could even be prohibited from smoking while walking. According to Today, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) is exploring an extension of the smoking ban to reduce the impact of second-hand smoke on non-smokers. |
Thailand floods: Updated info for tourists Posted: 14 Oct 2011 02:30 AM PDT As authorities in Bangkok continue to safeguard the city in a race against time after warnings it could be hit by the worst flooding in decades in the coming two weeks, signs of optimism are emerging. According to a report posted Friday afternoon on Bangkokpost.com, officials say the situation is now under control and inner Bangkok will not be inundated with severe flood waters. |
Ryanair’s 5 'cheapest' money-saving schemes Posted: 14 Oct 2011 02:15 AM PDT Any publicity is good publicity for Dublin-based budget airline Ryanair. The no-frills airline recently announced plans to cut down to just one toilet per aircraft (see below), and that had us wondering: are announcements like their toilet fee and "fat tax" tasteless marketing ploys, or is Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary just really cheap? Despite wanting to strip their passengers of basic comforts like toilets and seat pockets, Ryanair is doing good business. |
Backpackers out: Kings Cross’ Kombi and campervan ban Posted: 14 Oct 2011 01:43 AM PDT Victoria Street, Potts Point, is Australia's version of Bangkok's Khao San Road. Next to Kings Cross, the leafy street is backpacker central: terrace houses are full of dorm beds and travelers wander the streets in flip-flops. For years, it's been the place to buy Kombi vans and campervans to drive around Australia -- with about 30 street-side vehicles being offered for sale every day. But the red light district has given the ad hoc car market the red light, and the government is moving the backpackers along. |
4 easy weekend getaways from Singapore Posted: 13 Oct 2011 09:56 PM PDT Sometimes you just need to get out of Dodge City, but the last thing you want is to hop on an airplane, again. When you're suffering from cabin fever, these four weekend escapades will provide the perfect remedy to the hustle and bustle of Singapore. And best of all you won't have to contend with surly flight attendants, invasive metal detectors, struggle with oversized cabin luggage or be stuck in a stationary plane, thanks to a engineering fault. 1. Japanese tourism chiefs out to woo visitors with disaster updates Posted: 13 Oct 2011 07:41 PM PDT Oh, to be a fly on the wall at a recent meeting of the government tourist body in Japan when it discussed one of the least palatable aspects of the drive to win back overseas tourists: how to warn them about future disasters. There's no denying it's a desperately difficult task faced by the Japan Tourism Agency (JNTO) in the wake of March 11, but we're not sure launching a prominent disaster-warning service will actually encourage many (any?) more travelers to visit Japan. |
10 of the world's best hotels for pets Posted: 13 Oct 2011 03:00 PM PDT Sometimes, Max and Felix deserve a break too. And when they do, you might feel a little envious. Some of the options available to your furry best friends can make your last vacation in that three-star hole behind the construction site on that oily beach seem somewhat lackluster.
