'MasterChef Australia 2011' winner Kate Bracks Posted: 08 Aug 2011 01:37 AM PDT It was creating a delicious snowman dessert from the world's best restaurant, Noma in Copenhagen, that changed Kate Bracks' life. Her newfound fame is a long way from her life in rural Orange, a few hours drive west of Sydney. While enjoying her celebrity status, this humble winner just can't seem to absorb her achievement. |
Samosapedia: Best bloody diaspora desi dictionary in the world Posted: 07 Aug 2011 10:16 PM PDT Part dictionary, part open encyclopedia, part gag reel -- four guys launched desi humor site Samosapedia barely a month ago, collecting terminology that celebrates the absurdities and idiosyncrasies of global desi culture and language. In their first month Samosapedia's Arun Ranganathan, Vik Bhaskaran, Braxton Robbason and Arvind Thyagarajan amassed 2,000 words contributed by almost 200 active users with close to 400 words queued for publishing and an average of 35 new words submitted every day. |
Roland Kelts: Tokyo after the quake -- what matters now? Posted: 07 Aug 2011 09:55 PM PDT I was commissioned late last year to contribute a chapter on Tokyo to a book called "City Branding: Theory and Cases". I have lived in Tokyo for a number of years and often find myself writing about the city, or at least my version of it. As an expat who travels frequently and spends roughly half of each year living in New York, I am particularly sensitive to how Tokyo is perceived beyond its metropolitan and national borders. The opportunity to write about Tokyo as a "brand," an image, idea and product, was both disturbing and enticing. What did it mean? |

Posted: 07 Aug 2011 05:00 PM PDT
5 reasons why expats love Singapore Posted: 07 Aug 2011 03:00 PM PDT Choosing to live in Singapore versus other Southeast Asian countries can come at a cost. The recent Mercer Cost of Living survey pegged Singapore as the world's eighth most expensive city to live. In Asia, it is the third most expensive city, behind Tokyo and Osaka, and ahead of Hong Kong. So why do these long-term expats choose to stay on? The ease of a lifestyle with the option of domestic help, the safety factor, a high level of education and multi-cultural nature seem to be common themes -- and weirdly, they all love the weather too. CNNGo talks to five long-term expats to find out more. |
