How to find the best economy seats on international flights

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 10:54 PM PST

There's only one seat worse than a dentist's chair before a double root canal, and that's the middle seat on a long-haul international flight.

Fortunately, if you are destined for economy class, there is still a way to get the most space for your buck, as reported in this Australian Business Traveller article.

Enoshima

In a recent CNNGo iReport assignment, we asked readers to share their photos of their favorite Japanese travel destinations.

Keith Hollis, currently living in Yokohama, sent us these images from his voyages around the country and closer to home. Here, he explains the selections he made and what stood out for him.

Royal Tokyo

I shot the pictures of the crowds greeting the Emperor at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo around January 2 this year.

Every year the Emperor makes only a few appearances in public, one occasion being shortly after the New Year.

Travel alert to Bangkok

Pity a poor Briton living in Hong Kong who wants to start a holiday in Thailand today. Just who should he or she believe?

First, there's the Hong Kong Government, which yesterday opted to continue its Red Alert, preventing Hong Kong tour companies from flying groups to Bangkok and warning that ''residents intending to visit these areas should adjust their travel plans and avoid non-essential travel to areas seriously affected by flooding.''

Strange Singapore

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 09:00 PM PST

Singapore's annual calendar may be packed full of exciting happenings, but a handful of intriguing, centuries-old traditions take place well away from tourist eyes.

Check out these four obscure but oh-so-interesting occasions:

Nine Emperor Gods Festival

Come the ninth lunar month (starts October 23 in 2012), while the rest of this island gets on with modern life, a little-known ritual unfolds in a corner of Singapore.

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival may not be the biggest occasion in these parts, but it is met with almost fanatical devotion by members of the Jiu Wang Yeh Taoist sect.

As its very name suggests, this pious party revolves around some heavyweight VIPs.

Uluru's face-lift

Uluru

Uluru is signifying a paradigm shift in Australian tourism.

The industry has been criticized for marketing itself with outdated clichés to stale markets.

But travelers to the red center won't cop Crocodile Dundee lookalikes in khakis and Akubra hats. Instead, they'll experience indigenous culture in refurbished luxury.

Introducing the most beautiful museum in Seoul

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 02:15 PM PST

With 10 exquisite hanok structures fitting together on approximately 6,600 square meters of beautifully groomed landscape, the Korea Furniture Museum is perhaps the largest best-kept secret in Seoul.

And for the time being at least, it wants to stay that way.

Having unofficially opened in 2008 after 14 years of construction, the private museum is the beloved brainchild of its owner and director, Chyung Mi-sook, a former professor at Yonsei University and a collector who personally amassed the museum's 2,000 pieces of Joseon Dynasty furniture over the past five decades.

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 02:00 PM PST
